The Lunar Calendar
What is the Hijri Calendar?
The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar used by Muslims worldwide to determine religious dates and observances.
The History
The Hijri calendar begins with the Hijra (migration) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. This moment marks the beginning of the Islamic era, with the first year being 1 AH (After Hijra).
As a lunar calendar, it follows the cycles of the moon, with each month beginning at the sighting of the new crescent moon. This makes the Islamic calendar approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar calendar.
